University of Michigan shares generative AI ‘knowledge hub’ 

The University of Michigan published a website and report on Monday exploring how generative artificial intelligence will impact students, faculty, researchers and staff.

The report, which was created by the university’s IT division and an 18-member university committee, recommends establishing an initiative to use generative AI tools for education and research, creating privacy standards and data-use controls for the technology’s use and expanding the university’s IT infrastructure to “accommodate secure and equitable access” to generative AI platforms.

The university also plans to release its own suite of university-hosted generative AI tools this fall.

“We know that almost every group at U-M is having their own conversations about GenAI right now,” university Chief Information Officer Ravi Pendse said in a press release. “With the release of this report and the website, we hope to create a knowledge hub where students, faculty and staff have one central location where they can come looking for advice. … More than anything, the intention of the report is to be a discussion starter. We have heard overwhelmingly from the university community that they needed some direction on how to work with GenAI, particularly before the fall semester started.”
