Educause cancels, but un-conferencers press on

Fears of the coronavirus are leading groups everywhere to cancel their conferences, including Educause, which canceled its Learning Initiative conference last week. Some 600 would-be attendees didn't get the chance they'd been waiting for to learn about emerging technologies and trade notes with fellow educators. Instead, a handful of attendees who'd already arrived put together their own smaller, more informal event. Betsy Foresman reports on how the unofficial gathering went.

Futuristic trash

Arizona State University students recently joined with a Phoenix-based waste disposal and recycling company to develop concepts that might be used to build the garbage truck of the future. Conceived both as a chance to develop new technologies the company could use to streamline efficiency of municipal operations and as a chance to set down a new workforce pipeline for technological talent, the program developed ideas like trash bins that drive themselves to the dump and AI-powered hydraulic truck arms that can grab cans on the first try. Arizona builds new innovation hub

The University of Arizona's Tech Park at The Bridges is the school's latest tech park, an incubator for new technology businesses and regional economic growth engine. “It will be a hub for idea exploration, product development and unique collaboration” said the university's Elizabeth Cantwell. Located just a few miles from the university's main campus, leaders hope to attract new businesses to the area with the promise of providing a fresh stream of new graduates. Jake Williams has the details.

Penn State plans for innovation, too

Pennsylvania State University has plans to build an innovation hub of its own near its New Kensington campus. The facility, slated to open its doors next year, is to serve as a hub for collaboration, training and access to cutting-edge technology in the city and prepare the current and future workforce for emerging careers in STEM. Betsy has the details.

Texas A&M develops new way to predict floods

While traditional methods for predicting how floods will unfold rely on physical models of the environment, a new model built by researchers at Texas A&M University relies on machine learning and historical data. “Our new algorithm considers the underground drainage channels to provide an accurate representation of how floods propagate," said professor Ali Mostafavi. The project could be useful to municipal authorities and is introducing students to real-world problems faced by public safety officials. Colin Wood breaks down how it works.

Improve security practices with better data insights

When an organization makes cyber defense plans, the data it chooses to collect and analyze can play a pivotal role in determining the ultimate impact of an attack. That’s why IT executives should consider investing in a platform that’s able collect, leverage and understand enterprise data, according to a new Splunk report. The report details how modern platform solutions, capable of operating as a “security nerve center,” are better suited than many specialized tools at identifying gaps in network defenses.
