Olivet Nazarene U. launches virtual tuition-free classes for adults

Olivet Nazarene University will offer online general education classes for adult learners for no up-front cost. The courses, part of the university's "YourWay" program allows students to enroll in courses for free, and only charges them if they want transcripts indicating their passage of the course. The program is part of the university's overall adult lifelong learning initiative and runs in the cloud on Salesforce's Trailhead online learning platform. Jake Williams has more.

Mental health first-aid training spreads to Niagara University

Niagara University faculty are receiving mental health first aid training as part of the school's efforts to address the needs of students, staff and faculty experiencing feelings of anxiety, isolation or depression as the pandemic keeps people learning and working remotely. The training is the latest announced initiative from a higher education institution designed to train individuals in mental health first aid. Betsy Foresman has the details.

Apple announces $25M Propel Center for Black colleges and universities

To create more education opportunities for people of color, Apple announced on Wednesday plans to fund a $25 million innovation and learning hub, called the Propel Center, for students attending historically Black colleges and universities. It also announced plans develop coding and tech education programs for students in Detroit. The new projects are part of Apple’s $100 million Racial Equity and Justice Initiative project, which aims to expand opportunities for communities of color across the country and to help build the next generation of diverse leaders. Indian River State College taps mobile app to keep students engaged

As college enrollment sags by 26% since 2010, higher education institutions look for creative ways to keep their students engaged. Indian River State College announced this week it will begin using a digital platform from the New York City-based startup Rah Rah as it attempts to keep its students from dropping out. The mobile app aggregates numerous institutional systems into a single interface, providing students a way to check on everything related to their college life, like sporting events, advising and financial dealings. Leaders at Indian River, a college based in Fort Pierce, Florida, that advertises itself as “the most affordable college in Florida,” said they needed a way to keep their students, most of whom don’t live on campus, connected and engaged wherever they live.
