U. Alabama retiring physical cards

The University of Alabama will continue to modernize its ID card system by deactivating old magnetic strip cards this summer, the school announced last week. It’s the last step in the university’s plan to switch students and staff to either chip-enabled cards that are designed to be more difficult to steal data from, or smartphone-based cards that use two-factor authentication for security. Google program offers digital skills to former inmates

Google announced a new program last week designed to provide basic digital skills training to people exiting incarceration. While many recent workforce development programs aim to pipe more workers into technical positions, the Grow with Google Career Readiness for Reentry Program offers community organizations online resources to supplement technology programs for rank beginners. Florida could guard colleges from online-learning lawsuits

Florida higher education institutions would be shielded from civil lawsuits related to operations during the coronavirus pandemic, protecting from liability over online learning disputes, if Gov. Ron DeSantis signs a bill passed by the state legislature last week. When the pandemic caused universities to shutter for social distancing, students nationwide sued over the quality of online classes. By last October, students had filed more than 100 class-action lawsuits against their colleges and universities, asking for reimbursement. Emily has the details.
