Ohio modernizes virtual tutoring platform

The Ohio Library and Information Network, or OhioLINK, a pool of academic materials and resources shared between higher education institution academic libraries, is updating the state’s virtual tutoring software. The organization last week announced its eTutoring program will now run through a platform called TutorOcean. OhioLINK serves 88 institutions and Ohio’s state library, with about 20 members participating in the virtual tutoring program, where students can attend live tutoring sessions and get free written feedback. CSU system grants iPads to 35,000 students

The California State University system announced Monday that it will provide Apple iPad Air devices and peripherals for as many as 35,000 of its first-year and new transfer students. Initially to be launched at eight of the university’s campuses, administrators said it’s part of “a bold initiative to enhance student achievement and create more equitable opportunities.” The so-called California State University Connectivity Contributing to Equity and Student Success, or CSUCCESS, program targets students facing financial difficulties or who are first-generation college students: Colin Wood has the story.

Furman U. hires first Chief Innovation Officer

Furman University recently announced the hire of its first chief innovation officer, Anthony Herrera, who helped found the South Carolina school’s institute for innovation and entrepreneurship. Herrera began at Furman in 2018, and has since focused on building offerings in entrepreneurship for students and the wider campus community. In his role as chief innovation officer, he said he hopes to continue the work of bolstering Furman’s relationship with businesses and residents in the Greenville area, including planning for a new innovation district.
