Emeritus announces $650 million funding round

The online course provider Emeritus plans to work directly with businesses and governments and expand into new verticals like health care with a new funding round of $650 million, the company announced last week. Through its course offerings developed with universities that include Northwestern and MIT, Emeritus earns 90% of its revenue from consumers, President of Enterprise Business Charles Schilling told EdScoop. Users often take courses in subjects like leadership and technology and get reimbursed by their employers, he said. Emily Bamforth has the details.

Emory U. debuts new classrooms for virtual learning

Emory University’s Goizueta Global Business School is using three classrooms outfitted with wall-sized screens, microphones and software dedicated to hybrid or fully virtual learning with hopes of allowing the program to connect with more students, the school’s associate dean told EdScoop. The Atlanta private school opened two classrooms equipped for virtual learning and one for hybrid learning in May, using a set-up called “OneRoom” from the visual communication company X2O Media. In these classrooms, the instructor is free to walk around during virtual classes. Emily has it.

Government officials, parents disagree on schools paying ransomware demands

Research published last week by the cybersecurity company Kaspersky found that a majority of parents of K-12 students would support their children’s school districts paying off ransomware actors in the event of an attack, despite the fact that government officials routinely tell victims not to pay and industry experts warn that payment is no guarantee of recovering corrupted or stolen data.
