Miami-Dade College names new CIO

Miami-Dade College this month announced a new chief information officer, hiring Tanya Acevedo, previously the chief technology officer for Houston’s airport system. Acevedo spent four years leading information security, strategic planning and technology at Houston’s three airports. Before Houston, Acevedo held the chief technology officer role in Travis County, Texas, which contains Austin, and worked as IT program manager for Orange County, California, according to her LinkedIn profile. NSF awards $3 million for cyberinfrastructure in higher ed

The National Science Foundation awarded nearly $3 million dollars this month to a group of researchers and university leaders looking to bolster cyberinfrastructure at minority-serving institutions. The grant is set to begin on Friday funding training, pilot programs and workforce development to develop information systems that advance research capabilities. The work is to be led through the Minority Serving-Cyberinfrastructure Consortium, a group of 27 colleges and universities from across the country. Emily has it.

Georgia Tech announces new CISO

The Georgia Institute of Technology announced Monday it’s hired Leo Howell, the chief information security officer at the University of Oregon, as its new CISO. Howell, who’s also been serving as Oregon’s interim chief technology officer, will start at Georgia Tech Oct. 18, according to a press release. Howell’s hiring came at the end of a nationwide search for a full-time replacement by the Atlanta university after the departure of former CISO Jimmy Lummis, who stepped down in January to take a position with Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.
