Nearly 1,000 institutions contribute to new higher ed policy database

A higher education policy database with information from almost 1,000 colleges and universities, launched Tuesday, is the result of more than three years of work between the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers and the software company CollegeSource. The database includes information on admissions requirements and course descriptions, but also on policies outside of academic operations — subjects like violence, freedom of expression and student data. U. of Arizona ties president's contract to IT goals

University of Arizona President Robert Robbins is set to earn an additional $50,000 if he completes one-year and long-term performance goals associated with information technology, per a contract approved by the state’s board of regents last week. Robbins will look to reduce college and department overhead costs by about $10 million through “appropriate” centralization in multiple university service areas, including IT, within the next year to earn $25,000, according to the contract. To earn another $25,000, he would need to update the university’s IT security operations, including revising the strategic plan and a system for evaluating security practices by 2024. U. Missouri plans development of NSA-funded cyber brain

University of Missouri researchers plan on developing an add-on cybersecurity solution for smart devices, using machine learning to adapt to threats, associate professor Prasad Calyam told EdScoop. Missouri’s College of Engineering won a $500,000 grant from the National Security Agency for the project, the university announced last week. Calyam, who is also the director of the university’s Center for Cyber Education, Research and Infrastructure, said researchers are looking to develop a solution that would address threats at the device’s gateway, where it connects to the cloud. Many vendors don’t build in regular updates for these devices to adapt to emerging threats, he said, and devices aren’t built to deliver feedback on attempted attacks.
