How higher ed is handling AI ethics

As artificial intelligence advances, powering everything from virtual assistants to autonomous vehicles, universities and colleges are researching its potential effects on the humans it’s intended to serve. Along with establishing research centers and proposing new programs to explore concerns around incorporating AI into everyday life, higher education is also looking at how best to adopt AI for everyday operations. Cyberattacks force two community colleges to close for recovery

Butler County Community College in Pennsylvania and Lewis and Clark Community College in Illinois temporarily closed their campuses following Thanksgiving week to recover from cyberattacks. Information technology officials at both schools announced Nov. 24 on social media that they were experiencing service issues. The respective attacks are part of an overall rise in cyber threats against higher education and other organizations. Federal agencies issued a warning ahead of Thanksgiving to “stay vigilant” during the holiday, citing several 2021 attacks that took place during or ahead of holidays. Emily has more.

Colorado universities plan to track laptop lending programs

Two Colorado universities plan to find out how lending computers to low-income students affects them. The University of Colorado Boulder and Colorado State University Pueblo are purchasing the devices, Jamie Wittenberg, CU’s associate dean for research and innovation strategies, told EdScoop. Once they’re distributed, the two schools plan to measure the effectiveness of the lending program by periodically surveying the students and tracking the success of their academic careers.
