City College of New York gets fiber donation

The City College of New York was recently connected to a federally funded 5G testbed in Manhattan, creating opportunities for its researchers to run experiments using high-speed wireless internet in an urban environment, the college announced last week. City College was added to the Cloud Enhanced Open Software-Defined Mobile, or COSMOS wireless testbed, after the telecom firm Crown Castle donated a swath of dark fiber — fiber optic cable that hasn’t been connected to a service provider — to the Harlem college. Higher ed has a new tool for screening cloud vendors

As colleges and universities mull what operations to move to the cloud, the higher education technology consortium Internet2 is testing how vendors and higher education institutions respond to the Cloud Scorecard, a vendor assessment tool in the works since 2019. The nonprofit released the scorecard, which universities can use for free as part of their procurement process for cloud-based service vendors, and a directory where higher education leaders can browse completed questionnaires, in November. West Virginia U. wants help for 15 IT modernization projects

West Virginia University plans to hire a consultant this year to get more information on the university’s digital systems and operations before embarking on 15 planned IT modernization projects, a university spokesperson told EdScoop. Along with an overhaul of WVU’s business and student information systems, the university’s leaders plan to re-examine the IT governance structure, redesign budget models, acquire a content services platform for digitizing documents and update cybersecurity policy. WVU’s board of governors approved the 15 “foundational projects” for the multi-year WVU Modernization Program in October. Check out the full story on EdScoop.
