Howard U. wants to use data to tackle societal issues

Howard University’s chief academic officer told EdScoop the institution is aiming to use a new research center dedicated to data analytics to attract more faculty and bring together existing research efforts to address deep societal issues using data. Researchers can investigate how to use data to counteract bias in algorithms used to generate financial markers like credit scores, as well as in technologies like artificial intelligence. Cengage and Pearson both acquired professional development firms on Monday

Pearson and Cengage both expanded their professional education and workforce development offerings through multi-million acquisitions announced on Monday. Pearson acquired Credly, a digital platform to design and offer digital badges and credentials, for $200 million, while Cengage purchased Infosec, which offers a phishing simulator and cybersecurity awareness training alongside technical courses, for $190.8 million. Central Michigan U. accidentally told students they'd won scholarships, but it's awarding them anyway

Central Michigan University will increase 58 student scholarships to full tuition after a test of the university’s new recruitment and enrollment management system mistakenly informed students that they'd won, President Robert Davies wrote in an email to the campus last week. The university first reached out to students offering a “moderate” increase to students’ existing scholarships, but then decided to raise that award to the equivalent of full tuition.
