Can AI be less gas-guzzling?

An MIT-led research group is taking a look at energy efficiency in artificial intelligence, anticipating a moment when advanced systems could suck up power at an unsustainable rate. Jesús del Alamo, an electrical engineering professor and the project’s co-leader, said that while AI software is growing quickly, hardware isn’t keeping up. “This program is about accelerating the development of new hardware to implement AI algorithms so we can do justice to the capabilities that computer scientists are developing,” del Alamo said. Emily Bamforth reports.

Arizona community college opens artificial intelligence lab

Elsewhere in AI, Arizona's Chandler-Gilbert Community College last week opened a new lab to teach the technology, the first in a planned network of facilities funded by Dell and Intel. The lab will help bring together students of all walks to learn and research collaboratively, after nearly two years dominated by remote learning, said Habib Matar, Chandler-Gilbert's lead AI instructor. "There was a big want for more community, more activities, more time in the classroom," he said. Read more about the lab.

Where's the modern cloud?

Only 3% of the higher-education finance and human capital management market has selected modern cloud solutions since 2015, according to a recent report from the Tambellini Group, an edtech research firm. Even as cloud service adoption accelerates, there’s still just a small number of vendors offering full-service options that fit the definition of “modern cloud" — which the firm defines as being built on infrastructure designed specifically to run in the cloud. Emily has details.
