Pentagon wants to team with HBCUs on ‘tactical autonomy’ research

The Pentagon is looking for a historically Black institution to lead a research center on "tactical autonomy," exploring strategy for how humans can team up robotics and AI in the military. HBCUs have "untapped potential" for the federal defense workforce, the Air Force's chief scientist said in a press release. The Air Force plans to dedicate $12 million per year for five years to the new center, which would be the first led by an HBCU. Jon Harper reports for DefenseScoop.

Siemens acquires Brightly in $1.5 billion edtech deal

Global tech giant Siemens is purchasing facilities management software company Brightly in a $1.5 billion deal. Siemens plans to use Brightly's products, which include monitoring and automation software and tools to manage work orders and schedules, to build out its own smart infrastructure portfolio. Both Brightly and Siemens work with colleges on using sensors to inform building operations strategy and save money. Emily Bamforth has more details.

For virtual reality to stick, universities need meaningful classroom content

Whether its connecting students in a VR classroom or creating a to-scale model of human anatomy, higher education VR and AR experiences need to achieve specific academic goals, experts told EdScoop. Though part of designing VR is making sure the experiences are immersive, the technology can also provide instructors another teaching tool to illustrate structures like proteins or processes like loading a test into a nuclear reactor.
