Look beyond degree completion to measure student outcomes, educators say

To more accurately measure student success, colleges and universities need to look at outcomes beyond degree completion, panelists said last week during an online event hosted by an education nonprofit. While tracking the number of students who cross the finish line to graduation is important, degree completion alone is not sufficient to demonstrate the value of a degree to discerning prospective students and their families, said Andrew Hanson, senior director of research at the Strada Education Network, the group that hosted the event. NTIA distributes first grants in 'Connecting Minority Communities' program

The NTIA on Friday announced broadband grants totaling more than $10 million for five minority-serving colleges and universities. The funding represents the first five grants distributed through the Connecting Minority Communities Pilot Program, a $268 million initiative aimed at improving high-speed internet access at Black, tribal, Hispanic and other minority-serving institutions. The funding is meant to provide internet access, equipment and train information technology personnel. Colin Wood has details.

Southern University system moves to Canvas LMS

The Southern University and A&M College System, which serves more than 11,000 students across Louisiana, selected Canvas last week as its new learning management system. The historically Black system, which comprises three universities and the internet-only Southern University Online, currently shares one consolidated Moodle environment to run curriculum across most of its institutions, though its law school had been using the cloud-based Canvas.
