Education Dept. sets edtech policy refresh

The U.S. Department of Education has selected four nonprofit organizations to lead the development of its next National Educational Technology Plan. The State Educational Technology Directors Association (SETDA), InnovateEDU, Learning Forward and Project Tomorrow will work with the Office of Educational Technology to determine how federal technology and connectivity investments could be leveraged to help K-12 schools create better and more effective learning opportunities for students and teachers. The plan was last updated in 2017, while plans for the latest revision were delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Lindsay McKenzie reports.

ICYMI: Education secretary thinks college rankings stink

U.S. News & World Report put out its annual list of top-ranked universities this week. (Congrats, Princeton.) One person who's probably not reading? Education Secretary Miguel Cardona, who said in a speech last month that many schools spend “enormous time and money" currying favor with donors, recruiting affluent students with high SAT scores and charming peers with "expensive dinners and lavish events," rather than improve metrics that show whether students are actually succeeding. "That system of ranking is a joke!" Cardona said during the Aug. 11 speech. Read more.
