Universities still granting admin privileges to all employees, survey finds

A surprising number of colleges and universities continue to give staff and faculty members administrative privileges on their computer networks, despite the obvious security risks. A recent Educause survey looked into how colleges’ approach to admin policies have changed in recent years, and found relatively little progress. In 2017, about 30% of all respondents said their institutions automatically granted admin privileges to all employees, with no questions asked. Read more.

Attracting diverse talent getting harder, say higher ed IT leaders

Colleges and universities have long struggled to lure tech talent away from the private sector, but the challenge of attracting and retaining staff is only getting harder, attendees at an Educause conference in Denver said this week. IT staff in higher ed are feeling tired, stressed and burned out, with large numbers reporting plans to leave their jobs, Mark McCormack, Educause’s senior director of research and insights said during a session on workforce trends. And as schools consider how best to attract and retain new talent, Karen Catlin, a former tech executive turned career coach, urged IT leaders to consider how the language of their job advertisements might be discouraging women and people of color from applying. Lindsay McKenzie reports.
