Educause priorities list gives IT leaders a seat at the table

Campus technology leaders playing greater roles in overall institutional strategic planning was cited as the top issue on Educause's annual list of higher-ed IT priorities. The list, teased last week during Educause's conference in Denver, and published this morning, saw university tech officials getting a greater “seat at the table” in major decisions displace privacy and cybersecurity, which fell to No. 2. Educause members also gave high priority to the need to create workplaces that are accommodating to staff needs and supportive of their career objectives. Lindsay McKenzie reports.

New federal IT requirements coming to higher ed, Educause says

There are some big changes on the horizon for universities' IT policies, relating to cybersecurity, data privacy, and web accessibility, speakers at the Educause 2022 conference in Denver, said on Thursday. One change is coming after the Federal Trade Commission published its revised Safeguards Rule last Dec. 9, with a one-year deadline to come into compliance with new cybersecurity protections and requirements. Higher education IT leaders should be working toward meeting that rule's long list of requirements, said Jarett Cummings, senior adviser for policy and government relations at Educause. Those include appointing a person or team to coordinate an institutional information security program, conducting a risk assessment and developing information-security controls. Lindsay has more.
